How does Laser Hair Removal Work?

1. You will be asked to shave 24 hours prior to treatment.
2. During treatment the laser emits energy in the form of light onto the skin. The melanin in the hair absorbs this energy and converts it into heat which then destroys the hair follicles to prevent or stop future growth. Some patients may experience slight reddening and localized skin swelling, like sunburn, but this dissipates quickly.
3. Before your next treatment (4-6 weeks), you may experience slight regrowth of some hair, though it is usually more delicate and lighter than what was initially removed. Most of these hairs were treated and are shedding. It is not re-growth. You may shave the area treated 3 days after your treatment. The hair follicles need to purge the hairs that remain under the skin. Please refrain from waxing, plucking, or bleaching between treatments (shaving is allowed).

Don’t forget that laser hair removal works best with dark colored hair. Laser technology is not able to target follicles without melanin, meaning that patients with white, red, grey, or blonde hair will not see results.

Pre-Treatment Laser Hair Removal Instructions

• Please shave the area being treated 24 hours PRIOR to your appointment.
• No sun exposure to UV light in the 7 days prior to treatment.
• If you have a sunburn or recent tan you will need to wait 2 weeks before the area can be treated.
• Avoid using fake tanning products in the 7 days leading up to treatment. If you have been using them before this time frame, please exfoliate to try and remove any residue.
• For 2 weeks before and after treatment make sure to avoid chemical peels and any procedures involving lasers to the treated area.
• Please check if any products in your skincare routine contain any of the following chemicals/ingredients and if so avoid them to the treated area for 7 days prior to treatment: Alpha hydroxy and beta hydroxyl products (AHA/BHA), hydroquinone, retinols/retinoid, and Differin.
• Clients who experience cold sores are recommended to take an anti-viral before treatment as the procedure can act as a trigger.
• Clients must avoid waxing, tweezing, and epilation 14 days before treatment otherwise this interferes with the lasers ability to locate hair follicles.
• Unfortunately, if you have been taking acne medicine or similar products within the last 6 months, we are unable to perform laser hair removal on you due to medical concerns.
• If you have received a cosmetic treatment such as dermal fillers, you need to wait 2 weeks both before and after injection before receiving treatments in the area being treated.
• Antibiotics have been known to increase photosensitivity; we ask that you are free of such medications for 14 days before treatment.
• Clients should avoid any physical activity that increases blood pressure or body temperature for 2 hours before and after treatments.
  

Post-Treatment Laser Hair Removal Instructions

• Stay away from UV sun exposure for 7 days after treatment.
• Sun protection of at least SPF 30 should be worn daily. (Even without laser hair removal!)
• No laser or skin treatments should be performed for at least 2 weeks after laser hair removal treatment.
• In the event of redness or tenderness, cold towels, ice packs or 100% aloe vera gel can alleviate discomfort.
• Avoid devices that generate heat such as saunas, hot tubs, hot showers, electric blankets, and seat warmers for 24 hours after treatment.
• Do not apply creams, makeup, deodorant, moisturizers, oils, or perfumed products for 24 hours after treatment.
• In the case of leg/bikini treatments avoid wearing boots, skinny jeans, or tight leggings directly after treatment for 24 hours.
• Be patient – Do not shave the treated area for 3 days after treatment. No waxing or tweezing the treated areas for the duration of your laser hair removal treatment sessions.
• For best results it’s important that you follow the advice of our providers to ensure the best outcome. Treatment sessions are scheduled every 4-8 weeks and are determined after each session.
